The breaks from school during the winter months can be limiting add in Covid and the choices of things to do dwindle significan’t. If you don’t have a trip planned, keeping the little ones active can be difficult and exhausting. Things can also add up very quickly and after the holidays this isn’t ideal. Below are some kid and parent friendly ideas that are either free or very in expensive.
Bundled up beach trip - if you have been following me, you know we are beach people. While summer is preferable we don’t discount a bundled up beach day. Lots of beaches have playgrounds in the sand as well. My kids love this. We welcome the change of scenery and I don’t discount the post beach nap either.
Local library - I personally don’t utilize this local resource enough. But a few followers suggested this and I think it’s brilliant. Whether it’s a read along or a craft, these are usually free activities and are local to you.
Parks and playgrounds - while the warmer weather is ideal, I welcome this very simple and effective activity all bundled up.
Ice skating - our boys play hockey so they on skates weekly. But this can be a really fun activity for the family. Check your local rinks for open skate times. Pro tip: put your little ones in snow pants so they don’t get wet and cold. Also, don’t forget their helmets.
Looking at Christmas lights - not sure about you, but we personally did not do this enough prior to the holidays. Most people don’t take their lights down right away (I mean I feel like I just put them up). So this is a great way to contain your little ones and get them out of the house.
Movie Night - whether you go out to the movies or set up a “theater” in your house, this is an easy way to jazz up a day off from school. If you’re doing it at home you can layer in a tent if you have one and make it like a camp out.
Snow tubing - probably not the cheapest activity on the list but this is a great way to spend the day off. If you’re local to NJ we love Mountain Creek and Campgaw.
Spa day at Home - if you have a little girl at home she will probably love this idea as much as mommy. You can make homemade face masks and do little manicures and pedicures. Have a little one who can’t sit still check out Color Street.
Call grandma - we are utilizing this quite a bit this break. Both grandmas are taking the kids for an overnight (or 2).
If you’re local to NJ you can check out my blog posts on the American Dream Mall activities. We also love Liberty Science Center. While these are both great indoor options, they do draw large crowds and are high touch activities.
Some other honorable mentions:
- Trampoline Parks
- Indoor Rock Climbing
